Prevent Injuries to Yourself and Others

Be aware of your surroundings

Locate the exit nearest to where you are working.  If the lights go out or if there is a fire, you need to know where the exit door is located.  People panic and become confused when there is an emergency.  You don't want to follow others unless you know they are going the right way.

Your Work Area

  • Keep your work area clean.  Exercise care when using scissors and cutting devices.  Do not leave scissors on your desk.  Get in the habit of putting them away after you use them.  Pick up staples that fall on the floor.  To prevent paper cuts, use a sponge or sponge bottle to seal large quantities of envelopes.  Return all equipment to its proper place at the end of the day.

  • Do not block the airflow around equipment.  Keep books, papers or other items off equipment.  Report frayed or ungrounded electrical cords.  Never use a chair, a desk or a table as a ladder.

  • Keep all drinks and liquids away from electrical equipment - computers, printers, copiers, calculators, etc.  Accidental spillage of a liquid can cause severe damage.

Stay Healthy

  • Report hearing problems (loud equipment, defective dictating equipment, etc.) to Bordwell & Associates.  Do not attempt to make equipment adjustments while equipment is in motion.  Never remove safety guards.  Only authorized persons may repair equipment.

  • Keep your shoes on.  Walk, never run.  Apply proper techniques when lifting.  Bend at the knees, keep your back upright, use your leg muscles and lift gradually.

  • Space your breaks and lunch hour so that you are not working on the computer longer than two hours at any given time.  You need to give your eyes, back and hands a rest.

  • Stay alert when using a microwave oven.  The dish and food that you remove will be extremely hot.  Use pot holders.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES - EARTHQUAKE

  • Remain calm.  You will be better able to assess the situation.  Follow any safety directions you are given.

  • If you are indoors, remain indoors.  Get under a desk, a table or in a doorway.  Stay clear of windows, glass, bookcases and file cabinets.

  • If you are in a tall building, remain on the same floor.  Do not use the elevators.  Fire alarm and sprinkler systems may go on.  Above all remain calm.

  • If you are in a crowded place, do not rush for the exit - others will have the same idea.  Instead, seek shelter under a table or other stable object.

  • If you are outside, get into an open area, away from buildings, parking structures, trees and power lines.

  • If an earthquake happens while you are in your car - pull to the side of the road, away from power lines and overpasses, and stop.  Stay in your car and listen to your car radio.

after the earthquake . . .

  • Remain calm and expect aftershocks.  Take time to assess the situation.

  • Check for injuries.  If anyone has stopped breathing, apply mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.  Provide emergency first aid as needed.  Do not remove a seriously injured person unless the person is in immediate danger.  Cover with blankets to keep warm.

  • Keep phone lines clear for emergency calls only.

  • Do not leave the building unless it is unsafe and even then, stay in a safe location near the site - it will be necessary to account for everyone in the building.  If there is a pay phone in a safe location, call Bordwell & Associates (collect).  We want to know that you are safe.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES - FIRE

  • Always be aware of your surroundings.  Identify the nearest exit to where you will be working.  This will help you find the exit if the lights go out or the building fills with smoke.  Look for safety devices, lighted exit signs, automatic sprinkler systems and smoke detectors.  Notify us if devices are not present.  We will immediately contact the client.

  • Take every fire alarm seriously.  Should you hear an alarm, don’t hesitate - act.   If the fire is in another room, leave if you can.  If your belongings are near you, take them.  If the fire is in a room where you are working, get out and close the door.  Report the fire.

  • If you must open a door; touch it first to test for heat.

If the door is cool, brace your shoulder against it and open slowly.  Be ready to close the door immediately if there are flames on the other side.  Crawl low in the smoke to the exit, fresher air will be near the floor.

If the door is hot, don’t open it - there could be fire on the other side.  If possible, use wet clothing to seal the cracks around the door.  Turn off air conditioners.

  • Call the fire department, even if you can see fire fighters outside, and give them your exact location.  If possible, signal or write "Here" on a piece of paper and put it in your window.  When firefighters look at the building they will immediately know where you are located.  Stay low to avoid smoke.

  • If you see smoke outside, do not break or open a window. Fire and smoke will enter immediately if you do.  Fire exits and stairwells are your best escape routes.  Never use an elevator during a fire - the elevator could stop at the fire floor.

  • Once out of the building, move as far away from it as possible, but stay at the scene - it will be necessary to account for everyone in the building.  If there is a pay phone in a safe location, call Bordwell & Associates (collect).  We want to know that you are safe.
